"The Elephant’s Foot" is an extremely radioactive mass of material formed by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. It is named for its wrinkly appearance, resembling the foot of an elephant. Located in the basement directly beneath Reactor 4, observations determined that it was made up of nuclear fuel, melted concrete, sand, and core shielding that melted and flowed together. In 1986, the radiation levels were recorded at 10,000 roentgens per hour. The average level of background radiation in an ordinary city is up to 20 microroentgens. Currently, exposure to the Elephant’s Foot for 500 seconds would cause death within 2 days. Multiple photos of the elephant's foot have been taken, with one even including a worker standing next to it. Over time it is gradually decomposing, but will remain radioactive for over 100,000 years.[1]

"The Elephant's Foot" is located in the city of Chernobyl at the "Cernobilijska Nuklearna Elektrana".
